West Flemish director's short film wins award at Festival of Cinema NYC in New York

The filmmaker Charlotte Verminck, who from Knokke-Heist in West Flanders, has won the award for ‘Best Sound’ for her short film ‘Mind of Thoughts’ at the Festival of Cinema NYC in New York. The festival promotes independent films that are not produced by major studios. It’s not the first time that the 26-year-old West Fleming has received an award for her film at an American film festival. Previously she took the award for Best International Film at the Beverly Hills Film Festival.
The award in the ‘Best Sound’ category, recognises the work of sound technicians Eneas Mentzel, Arjan Bogaert, Michel Gregoire and Kati Falk-Flores. ‘Mind of Thoughts was previewed earlier this year at the 25th Beverly Hills Film Festival, where it won the ‘Best International Film’ award.
‘Mind of Thoughts’ explores the power of our thoughts and their impact on our daily lives. The film’s director Charlotte Verminck explains that “We often think that we are not good enough or that we can do better. I hope that people will feel less alone and better understood after seeing the film.”
The short film certainly impressed the jury at the Festival of Cinema NYC. “As a director and screenwriter, this is a very important award for me. Sound is often underestimated, even though it contributes greatly to the power of a film. I am delighted that the people behind the scene have also been given recognition”.
Filmed at a prestigious hotel in Bruges
Part of the short film was shot in the village of Middelburg in East Flanders, while other scenes were shot at the prestigious Grand Hotel Casselbergh in Bruges (West Flanders). “I often went there for coffee with my grandmother. I always thought it was a beautiful place”, Charlotte Verminck said’
“Filming had never taken place at the hotel before. At first, they refused my request to film there, but they finally agreed.”
